I'm still alive

Very much so, actually. And so I'll give a very quick update on what I've been up to in the past month (isn't that insane? I just finished my fourth week of classes! And Claire hasn't even started yet...)
I'm in St. Therese Hall, rooming with Sarah Kelly, and definitely behaving myself. Therese is a great dorm, and way louder than last year, apparently. It's still quiet enough that I can get a lot of studying done in there, but we have a good time.
Starting with classes: my section is kind of not so great, we have a tendency to get stuck on things and never resolve anything. And people talk non-stop, and it's almost impossible to get a word in if you have any manners at all! That said, I'm enjoying it, and the reading is all really fun. We had our first all-school seminar last night, where they mix up all the classes and we all read the same thing. So I had a bunch of sophomores (who can't actually spell "Sophmores"), juniors and seniors in my section, and a couple of freshmen who aren't in my normal section. Considering that it was almost entirely different people, we still managed to get stuck, interupt each other and not resolve anything... Hmmm.
Dorm wars started last monday, and came to an abrupt halt on Thursday. Three days is the standing record, I belive, for shortness. They were glorious while they lasted, we got thoroughly wooed by Blessed Serra dorm, with wine, chocolates, flowers, couches, flaming juggling sticks, etc. Unfortunately, dorm wars got called off before we could officially accept them.
Today is the thirty-fifth anniversary gala dinner and such. We're having steak, and I'm excited. Food is always good, especially when it's good food. We're going to "steak" out a table for our group, and then once someone has claimed it, the rest of us will exclaim, "well done, well done!" Thank you to Sarah Susanka and Stephen Sims and myself for those "rare" puns.
I almost broke my nose a week or so ago, trying to go to bed. It was late in the week, and our room was getting messy. And my table lamp was sine a lightbulb, and therefore I had to use the overhead light. So I wandered over to the door to turn off the light, surveyed the path to my bed, and shut off the light. I promptly ran into Sarah's chair which was in the middle of the room, got completely disoriented, fumbled around with my hands, completely missed the supports for the bunk bed with my hands, and instead crashed headlong (nose first) into the support. It was extremely uncomfortable, and I wish someone had been there to see it (although it was pitch black so the wouldn't have been able to see me do it) because as it was it just hurt, and it would have been somewhat amusing had someone been there. I find it amusing now though.
If any of you want to send my pictures of the great Northwest, i woud greatly appreciate it. Or send some rain my way... Has the rain begun yet? It almost rained a couple days ago. It was utterly delightful.
Anyway, i love you all. Feel free to write or email me. Or call me, if you have my number. Here's my school address:

Hooray, Feef!
Wine, eh? I doubt that. I think you should post a picture of Stephen's black eye. Or maybe the parts of the theses that were lost. Or that guy's broken arm.
Speaking of broken arms, Deirdre and I went to the football game last night. This senior broke his leg and now he won't be able to play for the rest of the season. How depressing is that? Nordhoff won, though, and Joe did play a part in the game. :) Wow. You gotta love football.
Yeah. Anyway, I'm leaving soon for that biiping audition in Santa Barbara. So long, and keep enjoying your section. :)

wow Bing, that's pretty rad.

i think i caught something about... "behaving yourself." ... whats all that about?

So what are "dorm wars" exactly? Why do they involve chocolate and flowers? and why were they called off?? we need answers, Bing.

It was great to hear from you Bingy! I am very glad that you are enjoying school. My prayers were answered. I will continue to pray for you. I hope to hear from you again soon. I love you! God bless, and don't brake your nose.

Mmm, Bingy! I love you. I was imagining how amusing your fumble would have seemed. Those dorm wars sounded pretty thrilling while they lasted. :) I'll send you something very soon! I send a thousand kisses and hugs your way and all of my love. God bless you!

Wow... a whole three days. We had them for a couple of weeks. Mine sound a bit less exciting than yours, though. Black eyes, black outs, and wine! We didn't get wine... that I can remember. Of course, if we did, it all went into hiding in the prefect's room.

I'm so so so incredibly glad that you're having a good time. Your year sounds a thousand times better than mine did. Of course, you get to go home and party with your friends, which I did not. I'm glad you're enjoying classes as well. :D

And of course we're all dying to know... any special friends yet? :D :D :D

Well, have a wonderful week. I loved your puns. Don't break your nose, and God bless.

If Bing did have a 'special friend', do you honestly think she'd publicise it all over the internet?

Anonymous said...

Now that I have your address, I will be sending something to you as well in the near future. So do we send it to Bing/Fiona Bernhoft, and then the rest of the address?

This wine thing needs some explanation.

Fiona S M Bernhoft said...

Yes, Blessed Serra did give us a bottle of wine, and it did go immediately into hiding in a prefect's room.
Sean, I am behaving myself. Not a single rosary walk yet! And "someone", you show remarkable insight and intelligence. So I will remain silent on the subject of "special someones".
Dorm wars are basically an excuse for the guys dorms to beat each other up. And the girls dorms to do something similar, but less violent. And then the guys woo the girl dorms, and try to get an alliance with one, and then that girls dorm beats up the guys dorm's opponent's female counterpart, and ties hankerchiefs around their lances and such. They got called off mostly because someone switched off the power to Sts. Peter and Paul, which was bad for a number of reasons: 1) a bunch of seniors lost their thesis proposals/chunks of their theses; 2) the switch was one that nobody is supposed to touch because big death can result. So it was bad.
Yes, Rose, send mail with my name, then TAC then the address.
And this weekend there was a big forest fire near here, and there were fire men running all over campus (steady claire!) and ashes falling everywhere, and smoke lingering. It was disgusting, but I think it's gone now. Thank heavens. They were talking about perhaps evacuating us, which would have been intensely big death, to quote my friend Carson.
Anyway, i love you all.

Mmm...dorm wars sound fun! Ya, Sheil told me on the phone yesterday that you might have to be evacuated. Thanks be to God that you didn't!
I love you, Bing! God bless!

Gregaria said...

Well now I'm really curious! Silence can mean any number of things.

And, actually, I don't really expect you to say anything, but it is lots of fun teasing you :D

Anyways, glad you didn't evacuate or anything drastic like that.

Yeah, lost thesis proposals... I don't know what I'd do... that's pretty bad.

Anyways, God bless!

You don't really need to keep us updated on special someones, but I think you owe us all a rosary walk and detailing thereof...10 decades or 5 or 20, if perhaps the two of you decided in the middle of it that adoration would be a better place of prayer that day, or perhaps the state of the current affairs called on many, many, many more prayers than either of you had realized when you'd begun, etc...

I agree, Bing, that the ashes were utterly disgusting. And of course just when we thought the smoke had gone away for good, it appears to be returning again!

On the other note, I also concur that dorm wars were awesome while they lasted. I could definitely get used to receiving chocolates and wine every night...

Firemen... heh, heh, heh. I heard about that from my dear papa. Sometimes, just sometimes, I wish I were going to TAC. ;)

But deep in your heart, you know you should be going to UW...

Jeanbob! said...

thanks for the pictures and the note.

no. Everyone should be going to Poland not the UW. I forgive you juanito.

Zenka said...

Yeah, everyone should be going to Poland. Are you going, Sean? Sorry if that's a stupid question.
Bingy! I think we might be able to come, even though the fire is ravaging again. Thank God, St. Anthony and St. Joseph that the Santa Annas haven't started yet. :) Golly. I hate fire so much it hurts. So much it hurts...
*thanks to Iain for the tune to my version of the "so much it hurts" song.

Oh my gosh. UW, U-schmub! Ha! Everyone, I'm leaving in probably less than an hour and going to the rest of my life. Hopefully I'll be able to post some interesting adventures and such on here every now and then. In the meantime, y'all can pray that my clarinet audition on Tuesday morning goes as well as possible. *gulp* See ya!

WWU! Yeah!

Okay, actually, I, Claire, and her roommate are all exhausted. And I'm not even going here! I can't wait to go home.

But, actually, WWU seems like it will be a great school. Stephanie is really nice and I find that she has a lot in common with me and Claire, sense of humor being high on the list. That's pretty darn cool because, well, we have a unique sense of humor :)

I'll let Claire tell the rest. There are so many things to like. In a way, I wish I were going to college again... *nostalgia for moving away and being on my own*

Well, that's ok. I'm happy doing what I'm doing. Have a wonderful day, everyone!

(I feel like I'm stealing this blog. Maybe I should go post on my own :D)

Gregaria said...

Bad grammar... sorry.

Claire, her roommate, and I.

God bless.

Anonymous said...

I hope that you have a wonderful time there. You will be a good example to everyone I'm sure :) God bless you, and I can't wait to hear from you!

What is your address to college?

Anonymous said...

Here at UW we get a lot of free stuff. At least I did today.

Did you, Claire?

That's what I thought.

And we killed UCLA the other day at football. You missed out.

See the perks already?

Plus, there's lots of heathens to go out and convert.

Anonymous said...

But! there is a swing dancing club at Western! :D

Anonymous said...

Swing dance, eh? Fun fun!

Gregaria said...

Yeah, and a really, really awesome Catholic club as well. Not that you guys at UW aren't cool, but I bet you aren't as big. Oh, and just in case you didn't realize, I'm not Claire :)

I don't even know if she's been on the computer at all since getting to Western.

I love the campus, by the way, far more than the UW campus... :D

This rivalry is going to go on for a long time, isn't it?

Zenka said...

Yeah.
But guys, Notre Dame is way cooler than UW (Blech... *barf*) or Western. So, I guess I win in four years. Yay!
Claire, I love you. Won't you tell me your name? Enjoy the swing and Catholic clubs. By the way, is there a Musicians Without a Life club like you were hoping? If not, we can get one organized down here for a Thanksgiving meeting. :) You and I can be co-presidents.

Anonymous said...

Hi Bing! I just thought I'd tell you that I love you! I wish I could come visit and see your special college lifestyle, and I'd go on a rosary walk with you...... ;)good to see you're behaving yourself. God Bless ya sweetness!

Anonymous said...

We have a swing dance club here too. And we've got a bigger campus. And BETTER! WWU doesn't have a Quad, or an IMA, or big huge fountain, or lots of old things and buildings. The Newman Center has quite a few people at it, and I get to go to daily mass every day now. And Blessed Sacrament is a 20 minute walk away.

Yeah, this rivalry will never go away.

Anonymous said...

Western does have a big fountain in the middle of their square. And there are two really awesome old buildings that have been there since before Western was a university. :) Ha!

The temptation to delete on of those comments, just to be difficult was almost unavoidable. However, I didn't. TAC is better than UW and WWU put together. Not every college has ME, and Rosary walks!
I love you too Liz. I haven't been on any rosary walks yet, so you'll have to come visit. :)
And I forbid the UW-WWU (they're the same letters even!) rivalry making its way into the comment boxes on my posts. Claire's, yes, but not mine. I will be firm about this...
