WWU

Nash
My new home is 414 Nash Hall. Stephanie Battershell and I have one of the biggest rooms, plus we lofted our beds, and put our desks under them... and we actually have the weird problem of having too much free floor space! We want a couch. :) Today we decorated the closet doors in retro shades of orange and light blue, using Italian print paper to accent. (If I ever find the cord for my camera, then I can get a photo on here for y'all. Some day...) The deco really clashes with the piece of dark reddish carpet on the floor. Yay! Stephanie and I have poor co-ordination issues in common.

Batman
and Robin live on one of the dude floors of Nash Hall. We spotted them the first day. Batman, so named because of his black and yellow Batman shirt, is a geeky guy with plenty of short facial hair and black-rimmed glasses. His pal is about 4 foot, 10, completely bald, and has the same glasses. They both have stocky builds; they make quite a pair. Batman always looks very content, and I think every day is "the best day ever!" to him. When we pass by them on the sidewalk or somewhere, they always seem to be relishing a great conversation, probably about computers or bats.

Japanese
exchange students are all over the campus. Stephanie speaks Japanese, and plans on minoring in it. She's too shy to strike up conversations with them most of the time. It's fun, though, because when we're near a group of Japanese people, Stephanie sits there and makes translatory remarks, like, "They're talking about you."

An Adventure
Last night Stephanie and I went to Fred Meyer's. We took the bus there, without a solid plan for getting back. We bought interesting things like crackers for our room, toothpaste, and (best of all) an end table to put the TV on. The table was on sale- hooray! Then it was time to find a way home. We read the bus booklet a few times, and thought of taking the 16 back. This was the one we had come on. It would be a really circuitous route, but we knew it would get us back. The following moments sounded something like this. "When does the next bus come.... hmmm... 8:25. What time is it?" - "8:25." - "Oh, no!" Forget about taking the 16. After reading the book some more, we called the WTA people and found out that there was a nearby stop for the 11, which would go downtown, then turn into the 16, and come back to campus. We did that, and the cool thing was that it dropped us off right in front of our dorm. Perfect. Then we spent the next hour and a half putting together our new table. If I hadn't had a small flashlight and a cordless electric drill, we could not have put it together. Three cheers for power drills!!! Our TV is enjoying its new home.

Swing Kids
is the name of the swing dance club on campus. They're "the largest non-religious group on campus." Yes! Wednesday nights are swing dance nights, and I am so going to be there tomorrow. There is an hour lesson and an hour dance, and then, so I've heard, people go out and get dinner and the like. Sounds like way too much fun to me! When I found the group's table at the big fair thing yesterday, I even got to dance with some dude who was with them. I think his name was Josh. It was really amusing, and I learned a couple of new steps! "Josh" was really impressed: "You're the fastest learner I've ever danced with." Thanks, Jarsh.

Paul McCartney
is another celebrity from Nash Hall. This kid is basically Paul McCartney, age 18. I'll have to try and get a secret photo of him to show everyone. Today Stephanie and I were walking out of the dorm, when we saw him sitting on one of the lounge couches. We started laughing; I hope he didn't realize that we were laughing because of him. Oops! I wonder what he would say if I told him he looked like Paul?... "Everyone says that." Probably.

Clarinet Audition
This morning I played my audition. I will be placed in either the symphonic band, wind symphony, or orchestra. My preference is chamber music. :) That's what I really want to do, but I don't know if it will happen. I played the beginning of the Brahms 1st Sonata, which I played at my recital. That sounded fine. Then I played my Rudolph Jettel really-hard etude. It sounded kind of terrible, but OK. Then I just had to play a simple sight-reading page. There were about 3 lines, 6/4 time, but 6/8 feel, and it was in D Maj. So, that was a happy conclusion to my audition. Oh, and the clarinet professer, Gene Zoro, is really cute and old and delightful. I'm looking forward to starting lessons with him next week!

Classes
start tomorrow. I am not looking forward to music theory first thing in the morning. But then, I'm definitely not happily anticipating my first keyboarding class on Thursday morning. Oh boy... Speaking of music, though, they have a really neat music library here. I look forward to listening to records by the hour and checking out more Rudolph Jettel studies for the clarinet.

The Newman Center
There is a new Newman Center at WWU. I haven't been there yet, but I was told that it's a few doors down from my dorm. (Nash is right on the edge of campus, by the way.) Perfect! I'll have to get down there on Thursday afternoons for daily Mass. I look forward to getting to know lots of Catholics around here!

I'm going to go eat some dinner now. The food is tolerable, I suppose. I'll try to keep you updated as much as possible! Enjoy!

Superbly long post, m'dear! Sounds like lots of adventures.

I miss you! Well, actually, I just want to be there to tell you what to do and be older sisterly, generally. Somehow, I just have this feeling that you can't make it on your own. Gee, what a thought :D Don't you feel complimented? :D

Invite me over when you plan on going to the music library next. I LOVE any music library, as long as its fairly good-sized and has playable music.

Well, yeah. Hope your classes go well. If you need help in keyboarding, just call me ;D "Put your finger on the black key... A#... no, wait. Let me go to the piano." Yeah, that's not going to work.

Have a great day! Did you like how I carried on a one-sided conversation with you just now? Yeah...

Hey Claire thanks for the very informative and fun post. This as like the best introduction to somebodys life at college ever! Congratualations....

Your room sounds exciting.

Like I said that was a great post. Thanks for the update.

My favorite line is about the clarinet audition:

"It sounded kind of terrible, but OK."

They have an entire Music library? Thats so cool, I'm jealous. I could spend hours in there, wandering around...

Mmm... poor Hermes. When I visit I'll be spending more time in that Music Library than in her dorm! Delish.

Happy feast of St. Vincent de Paul! Woo! You go, Vince! :) Oio my garsh... I'm so happy you're having fun, Herm. And I actually don't spend as many sad moments in lonliness as I thought I would. I guess I'm just too busy doing Algebra!

Your closet doors sound really awesem.

God bless you! Have a certificate day! ;)

Today when I came back to the room after some classes, there was this fabulous poster on my desk of Breakfast at Tiffany's witha drawing of Audrey and a cat. Stephanie had just gotten it at the poster sale. It's perfect because it has red/orange, blue, and yellow stripes as the border, so it goes really well with our new theme! I put it up on the door. Yay!
I went to 3 classes today. In music theory we took a placement test, which, if you score high enough, will enable you to pass out of the class. I totally didn't do that well. I only actually knew like a fifth of the stuff on there. But, of course, by the end of the year, I will totally get 100%.
My calc class is good. Dr. Chalice is a funny professor. He vaguely reminds me of Clarence; kind of smokey and older with big gold rings and a gold necklace. Haha! It's in a dinky little cozy classroom too. I only wish I had my calculator, which is in the box that's still at home, of course.
My American pop. music class is really cool. I have the same prof. there as I have for theory. He has a really fun A.P.M. class. He played a sampling of some funk at the end of class, and we could make informed comments about it because we'd just learned so much! Great!
Anyways, I think I'll go explore more of this library now... see ya!

Man, sounds harsh...

I bet you're really wishing you'd gone to UW...

Well, Miguel, yesterday Kyle-from-Port Angeles-who-plays-the-violin and I were talking about how much better WWU is than UW. 300 times fewer hippies/drugees/etc. beautiful campus with a view of the bay, smallish, friendly town, and so on.
But we haven't heard any sterling tales of life and school at UW from you. How's it going? Or is it just too horrible to talk about?... :)

I think I've seen one druggy. That's pretty much it. And there is a few hippies/commies, but most people just ignore them.

But yeah, our view of Lake Washington is just so painful. And our huge, beautiful grounds are abhorrent. And the really old, cathedral like buildings are just aweful to be around. And all the old trees...and the tradition that just seems to hang in the air...it's just stifling me.

It's terrible. Just terrible.

=D

But I'll try to write a blog about it. Someday. When I stop being busy leaving long comments.

No offense, Mike, but I absolutely despise UW. That whole campus could be so much better. Esp. if it weren't in Seattle. What all the cities around Seattle needs is a whole ton of palm trees. You have no idea what it does to a city. :)

Anonymous said...

You've only seen one druggie, Mike? You're hanging out with the wrong crowd.

I love the UW because it's full of growing-up memories and I know it like the back of my hand, and I love Western because it's full of Claire.

Or at least some of it is.

...Okay, only a little bit, but that's still good enough for me.

Plus, I've always though Bellingham was a sort of whimsical town for whatever reason, so that makes the college there worthy of notice.

And yeah, the waking up to a giant golden misty view of the lake or of the campus/city is totally worth the price of living in such a building as McCarty, Mike. It's incredible.

Gregaria said...

Oh, gosh, guys, I love the views at Western... Its like living at the beach all the time. You can go out and look over the sound... the dining hall has the most fabulous views ever...

Just thought I'd throw that in. I think UW would also have nice views.

Views... *sigh*

Ga-Reattt! Thanks Claire. :) I'll send you a letter sometime soon. Hopefully before we go to Rome. Love you tons!

I guess I'm outnumbered here....

BUT YOU'RE ALL WRONG!!!!

UW is cool. And if you haven't gone here, you can't say it's horrible, or bad, or whatever. Which I guess goes for me as applied to WWU. But really, it is a pretty nice university. I'm happy to be here. As I'm sure Claire is for WWU. Which I'm happy for her.

Despite her misguided reasoning behind it...hehehe....=D

jk

I'm done arguing about it now I think.
